Outdoor Safety Week 23-29 March 2026
AdventureSmart UK & Ireland manages National Outdoor Safety Week, an awareness raising campaign to promote outdoor safety. During National Outdoor Safety Week, AdventureSmart and its partners are sharing key messages and resources about safety in the outdoors. Learn more.
What does Be AdventureSmart mean?
Being AdventureSmart means planning, checking and knowing how to get help if you need it.
Ask yourself 3 questions before you set off:
Am I confident I have the KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS for the day?
Do I know what the WEATHER will be like?
Do I have the right GEAR?
AdventureSmart messaging is informed by behavioural science, and the shared experience and insight of the partners and organisations involved.
Schools and youth groups
Check out the free resources on the AdventureSmart website.
You can download leaflets, posters and videos to use in discussions with your groups before going on an adventure. They’re great for sharing with your school families too - help them to #Plan#Check#Pack before they go out into the wild.

Providers
Join AdventureSmart as a partner to help spread these important safety messages. The campaign has lots of resources for you to use with your teams to help them learn and communicate key messages to the schools they support too.
AdventureSmart is supported by a wide range of organisations including Mountain Rescue Teams, National Parks and activity organisations.
Its aims include:
To promote safe adventures: Adventure is fun and with careful planning we can keep it that way.
To promote access to good information: Ensuring visitors and local communities have access to information such as accurate weather conditions to keep themselves safe.
To share our knowledge about adventure: Ensuring visitors and local communities know how to prepare for an adventure in the landscape in all conditions
Jake Wiid, Director at EVOLVE Advice says,
“Adventurous educational visits may be the first opportunity a young person has had to get out into the wild and take part in activities such as climbing, hiking and exploring cave systems. They may never have seen the majesty of the Welsh mountains or the expanse of a national park. For lots of children residentials and DofE expeditions open their eyes to new environments and opportunities, and sow the seed of adventure for life.
“Visit Leaders, providers and activity instructors play a really important role in educating young people about safety outdoors, and together with campaigns like AdventureSmart, can help get these messages out to friends and families too so that everyone can Be AdventureSmart”
